A strong first half effort by the Wildcats, including 2 shots off that were denied by the post, gave an early sense of confidence at Omaha South, a legitimate #1 contender in the State. The Wildcats pressed high and forced turnovers at a regular pace which set up some good counter attacking opportunities. Some sloppy play in the attacking third too often gave the ball back to a South team that found themselves on their heels a bit unexpectedly. Junior Nate Bauermeister connected on two shots that found the post and had the misfortune of bouncing out. A scoreless tie at half had the Wildcats believing they could compete.
A slight let down in intensity opened up a couple of balls through the back and O. South quickly had a 3-0 lead 12 minutes into the second half. Bauermeister drew one back off a corner which bounced in the box and he headed home. At 3-1 with 13 minutes to play South was awarded a PK after a breakaway. Senior GK was issued a yellow card and forced to come off the field leaving Freshman GK Cody Fuller to come off the bench cold and stand in for a PK. South converted and the game ended 4-1. The boys will return to action tomorrow at 1pm in the 3rd place match against either South Sioux City or Omaha Central.
