Millard West defeated Grand Island 3-0 on Thursday as three pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Seth Claybourne struck out Blake Leiting to finish off the game.
The pitching was strong on both sides. Millard West Wildcats pitchers struck out ten, while Grand Island pitchers sat down five.
One bright spot for Grand Island was a single by Javier Cruz in the second inning.
Caleb Riedel pitched Millard West Wildcats to victory. He went four and two-thirds innings, allowing zero runs on one hit, striking out eight and walking one. Jarod Kojdecki and Claybourne entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Claybourne recorded the last three outs to earn the save for Millard West.
Cole Evans took the loss for Grand Island. He allowed three hits and three runs over four innings, striking out four.
Max Anderson, Jackson Wright, and Garrett Kennedy each managed one hit to lead Millard West. The Wildcats didn’t commit a single error in the field. Jackson Meier had the most chances in the field with ten.
Cruz led Grand Island with one hit in three at bats. Grand Island was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Riley Krolikowski made the most plays with eight.
