The Wildcats punched their ticket to this year’s State Tournament with their 14th consecutive District Championship in a convincing win over a feisty Lincoln Pius team. The girls used a combination of tough, physical play mixed with a lot of finesse to jump on the Thunderbolts 6 minutes into the match with an amazing cross from Grace Ostergaard to a sprinting Jaiden Beeacher who slammed the ball into the net 6 minutes into the game. About 10 minutes later, Sierra Schmidt hustled to follow a miss shot and laid the ball off to Chaise Pfanstiel for the Wildcats second goal. The first half ended with a 3 goal lead as Katie Stoneburner was fouled in the box and confidently slammed in the penalty kick.
The Wildcats wasted no time growing their lead in the second half when, 4 minutes in, Morgan Rhodes sent a beautiful ball across the frame to find a waiting Katie Stoneburner. Sierra Schmidt finished a ball from Megan Kenny for the 5th goal off a deflected cross from Grace Ostergaard. Megan skillfully knocked the ball behind her foot to Sierra for yet another quality goal from the Wildcats. The scoring was completed with goals from Maddie Augustine and Taylor Phillips, both off assists from Sierra Schmidt, in the waning moments of the match.
It was also the 12th shutout of the season for the Wildcats and a defense led by Gabby Felker, Alix Kahler, Riley Atkinson, Riley James, and Alexis Naujokaitis.
The team is excited for the opportunity to continue to chase the goal they set from day one: win a State Championship. The hard part, and the fun that comes with it, is ahead and the team is very much looking forward to the challenge.
