The Wildcats came out strong against a strong win and controlled the game from start to finish resulting in the 3-0 victory over the Bulldogs. This young team has grown quite a bit since the first day and it showed tonight. In their first “win or go home” match, the Wildcats looked composed, confident, and determined.
Generating numerous chances in the early stages of the game, the Wildcats were shooting blanks until Morgan Atkinson got the Wildcats on the board in the 20th minute off a nice pass from Becca Baker. The Wildcat pressure continued, but were continually turned away largely as a result of solid goalkeeping. In the 37th minute, the Wildcats capitalized off an errant drop to the GK which resulted in a corner for the Wildcats. Elisa Franke served up a nice ball. Kelsey Baier settled the ball off her chest and slammed it into the back of the net off of the half-volley.
The second half, the Wildcats continued their smart play and attack on the Burke goal.
With about 20 minutes left to play, the Wildcats lined up for a 30 yard direct kick. Callie Kirchner hit a line drive that found the back of the net. Meghan Knudson’s run on the ball certainly helped to shield the GK’s view of the ball, but Callie had an amazing strike on the ball.
With the victory, the Wildcats move on to the District Final on Thursday and a chance to advance to the State Tournament.
