You could sense the frustration building throughout the match as the Wildcats couldn’t find that final ball to break the deadlock. There were chances throughout but too often a careless first touch led to a turnover, or a wayward pass led to an opposing counter. For some reason it seemed as if the turf field was actually a pool table tonight, with ball after ball going out of bounds or over the end lines. Papillion La Vista proved a tough and scrappy opponent constantly intercepting crosses and starting a dangerous counter attack that kept the back 4 of the Wildcats on call. The Wildcats were forced to defend more than a dozen set pieces which made for a nervous night on the whole but Senior GK Sam Fedde and crew led by Senior Captains Andrew Hall, Braedan Evans and Dan Zapata kept the clean sheet, a point of coaching emphasis the boys are probably tired of hearing already in the young season.
Scoreless after full-time, the match headed to OT number 1. Although the majority MW goals this season have come from build up, quality passing and clean finishes, it was pure effort and grit that finally got the boys on the board 3 minutes into OT. Senior Trevor Green found himself in a midfield tackle that he powered through and resulted in the ball shot out like a cannon toward Junior Striker Nate Bauermeister and a lone, and importantly last, defender. Bauermeister, always crafty with his touch and movement, slipped the ball past the defender and brilliantly took a touch toward the middle of the field forcing the defender into a no-win situation as he broke free on goal and was brought down from behind just outside the 18 yard box. The result was a straight red card for the last defender denying a goal scoring opportunity. Kolby Fahner stepped up to the kick on the left side of the 18 and froze the keeper with a wonderful strike over a defender and into the opposite upper corner of the net in what ended up being the game winner. That was Fahner’s second goal in as many matches. At the end of the 1st OT it was 1-0 and the Wildcats were up a man. Then the usual suspects took over as Sophomore Caden Tubaugh registered his team leading 4th assist in 3 matches by sending Bauermeister in behind the back line and into the 18. Bauermeister drew the keeper out and played a square ball to a wide open Daniel Gornell at the spot and the Junior slotted home his 2nd goal of the season. Bauermeister, a goal scorer by trade, tallied his 3rd assist in as many matches – showcasing the versatility and unselfish nature this team is developing.
Fedde finished the night with 7 saves.
The back line again saw a rotation of players including solid performances from Cam Olson, Riley Hackbart and Dan Zapata who all logged full matches while getting valuable contributions from Senior Jacob Mock, Sophomore Nasser Nabulsi and Senior Jacob Shirley. In addition to those mentioned, the midfield and attack saw contributions from Junior Nader Sharif, Senior Brock Schulz, Senior Zaki Alsharif, Junior Desmond Marshall, Senior Carter Ross and Junior Jonah Tubaugh. The Wildcats will take the pitch for the 4th time in 7 days this Saturday away at Papillion La Vista South at 12 noon.
